Weekend Update

It was a quiet relaxing weekend. I don’t have much to report but here’s what happened.

Erin and I were sitting around the house trying to decide how to fill our weekend when I received a text message from my Dad asking if I’d come down to work on my mustang. Not having better plans we packed up and headed down the Whittier. It was a fun impromptu visit and I made some good progress on the mustang. Maybe it’ll run again some day soon.
And Sunday, Erin and I spent the majority of the day just hanging around the house, watching movies and relaxing. It was nice to not have any commitments for once.

And that’s my weekend update. Short and sweet this week.

Weekend Update

Friday night the wife and I joined some friends for some good food and a bad movie. The food, carne asada, was good and the movie, Pocket Ninjas, was especially bad. When you reuse footage over and over to make up an 80 minute movie, odds are you don’t have much of a story to tell.

Saturday we went to the memorial service for the mother/grandmother of some good friends. It was a great celebration of her life.

Saturday night Erin and I went to dinner with Erin’s brother and his wife. We ate at Electric Lotus and then, on a whim, went up to the Griffith Park Observatory. It was a nice evening, and we got to see some cool stuff at the observatory.

Sunday morning I taught the Jr. High class and then Erin and I snuck out of church a little early to surprise my parents, grandparents and family at their church. They were quite surprised. We had a nice day with my family and attempted to get something accomplished on my never ending mustang project but fell short of making any progress.

IKEA Love

I thought this was a funny story: Beijing loves IKEA – but not for shopping.

There is also a scene in (500) Days of Summer where the principle characters enjoy a purchase free afternoon in IKEA.

I must admit that I too have spent a hot summer day or two wondering through the furniture aisles of IKEA. What is it about that place that is so enticing that you can spend an afternoon there without any intention of making a purchase? Perhaps it's the way they set up their displays. They are accessible, usable and invite you to jump right in and try them out. What do you think?

Weekend Update

Traci graduated from Pepperdine on Saturday

90′s themed birthday party for a friend on Friday night. Erin and I had a great time and probably outstayed our welcome, but we had to see how Singles ended. Would they all stay single?
Traci graduated from Pepperdine on Saturday morning. We spend our entire day out around Malibu and got a little sunburned.
Went to church, had lunch with some friends and watched a long, long movie. The last hour was really good, but the first hour and forty minutes was a little slow.

Dawn of the Dead and Zombie Movies

So, if you read my previous post you are aware that I watched Dawn of the Dead last night. Believe it or not, it was actually the first zombie movie I'd ever seen. The zombie movies have never been at the top of my horror movie must-see list simply because they just don't seem like they would be all that interesting to me. Really, how scary can a reanimated corpse be? They are not intelligent killers. They basically just use force and mindlessly wander seeking living humans on which to feed. In Dawn of the Dead, they couldn't open doors, climb, or band together to accomplish a task. At best, they basically just mob whatever comes their way.

Maybe the right zombie movie could change my mind, and I'm willing to try others, but Dawn of the Dead did nothing to convince me otherwise. Don't get me wrong, it was entertaining enough to watch, I just don't think I'd go out of my way to watch another one. I do have Night of the Living Dead on my DVR, so eventually I'll get around to watching that. And maybe it'll change my mind. I just don't think zombies are that scary.

A Poor Decision

I made a poor decision last night. Instead of watching the Lakers game live, I chose to DVR it and watch Dawn of the Dead instead. I thought it was a great idea at the time. My plan was I would watch the Lakers game later and skip all of the commercials and the half time show. Unfortunately, when I went to watch it, I got all the way through the end of the fourth quarter and the recording stopped. Normally that would have been fine, as I could care less about the post game wrap up, but this game went into overtime. Ugh.

30 Days of Night

So, last night’s malt beverage of choice was Shiner Bohemian Black Lager, and the movie was 30 Days of Night. The lager was good and the movie was bad, which is exactly how I expected it to work out.

30 Days of Night is about an isolated little town in Alaska which shuts down for 30 days each year when the sun falls below the horizon for an entire month. Usually it’s an uneventful time for the town, as most of the townspeople relocate for the duration of the darkness, but this year something sinister comes with the night. A mob of violent bloodsucking vampires descend upon the town and over take those who stayed behind.
It’s a violent movie complete with squirting blood and severed limbs. All in all, it was alright, but the vampires were mostly one-dimensional and not all that intelligent. I found myself thinking that they should have been able to over take the town with ease; but instead, their onslaught lasted for weeks. You’ll have to watch to see what happens. It’s mildly entertaining and ends in an unexpected way.

Bacheloric Rituals: Pizza, Malt Beverage and Horror

Erin left this morning for her first business trip of the new year. She generally travels a lot in the late winter and early spring. Over the years I’ve grown accustomed to her travels and have developed a few bacheloric (probably not a word) rituals which I repeat each time she leaves town. One of those rituals I plan to partake in tonight.

On my way home from work I’m going to stop by the grocery store to pick up a frozen pizza and a six pack of the first malt beverage that strikes my fancy. Once home, I will kick off my shoes, clear off the couch and settle in for some horror movie viewing pleasure. It’s a simple ritual really, but one I’ve come to enjoy.

Friday Night

Shared a huge plate of nachos at Sharky’s with Erin and then watched There Will Be Blood. I’m not sure the movie would have been very interesting without the score. Jonny Greenwood’s music really gave the movie its eerie quality.

Saturday

We slept in and around noon went down to Irvine with Erin’s parents to celebrate my brother in-law and sister in-law’s birthdays, which were back in November. We’re a little behind. In fact, now that that’s done we need to celebrate Christmas with a few friends, but that’s another story for another time.

In Irvine we ate some great food and had a great time together. We played Mario Kart and Guitar Hero while baking cookies, and eating way too much. Book ending out visit to Irvine was lunch at a local brewery and dinner at Lucille’s Smokehouse BBQ. Both were very enjoyable.

Sunday

Sunday at church we had our annual corporate meeting following the morning service. It’s a state requirement that we hold a meeting each year. Usually it’s a very quick meeting in which we elect members of the congregation to serve as trustees. This year I was voted in as a trustee. Kind of cool. I’m not exactly sure what it means yet.

Anyway, after church a large group went to Fudrucker’s for lunch and as we were getting ready to leave for our respective homes we received word that a beloved member of our church had just passed away. Even though her health had been progressively declining, it still came as a shock.

The rest of Sunday afternoon we were kind of in a funk, so Erin and I just lounged around the house until it was time to go serve dinner at the local homeless shelter (PATH Achieve) with our small group.

After serving dinner at PATH Achieve, we had a leisurely dinner with a couple friends at Chevys. Before too long it was time to go home and prepare for another week of work.

Vacation Update

Now that I'm definitely back at work, here's a sort of vacation update. It's not necessarily in chronological order.

Visited with family
Attended numerous Christmas parties
Ate a bunch of really good food
Lead worship at church
Shopped for Christmas presents on Christmas Eve
Ate a great Christmas Eve dinner cooked by my mother-in-law
Got up early on Christmas morning to volunteer for Dinner in the Park but didn't go because of the rain
Ate biscuits and gravy for breakfast on Christmas day
Ate a delicious Christmas dinner cooked by my mother
Opened stockings with my wife (Santa visited our new home for the first time)
Watched Will Smith in 7 lbs. and cried like a girl
Finally got around to watching the Andromeda Strain mini-series from a year ago
Hung curtains in bedroom
Checked my work email once
Bought a love seat for the office/library
Cleaned the house
Ate a bunch of candy
Rearranged furniture in the office/library
Played a lot of Mario Kart and Guitar Hero World Tour
Listened to Feist's The Reminder
Listened to the Beatles' Revolver
Visited the optometrist
Ate BBQ at Barn Burner and celebrated a good friend's birthday
Played Bunco with friends and family New Year's Eve
Got up super early and watched the Rose Parade from Erin's office building
Halfway watched the Rose Bowl from bed
Watched the Maltese Falcon
Mowed the lawn and raked leaves
Ate out a bunch
