There's just too much going on right now.

It's hard to focus and think clearly about anything while being pulled in so many different directions.

I think my cousin Sara shared the best course of action for this on her blog, Stories and Songs, yesterday.

Ok, so maybe hiding isn't the most productive way to deal with life, but sometimes I just wish I could pull the covers over my head and disappear for a few days.

And that's where I am today, wishing I were in bed with the covers pulled up all the way.

What is it that makes us want to retreat when faced with difficult situations? Why don't we just look at the difficult times and think, well it'll at least build character?

I think it boils down to the fact that we are always looking for the easy way out. And, when you are looking for the easy way out you don't experience the things in life that'll build character or, as author Donald Miller would put it, write a good story.

So, I'm going to try to not retreat. I'm going to work through everything that's going on.

Hopefully I'll be better for having lived through it.

I had considered writing a few more posts about Donald Miller’s A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, but instead I think I’ll just share a couple more passages that jumped out at me as I was reading.

Here’s the truth about telling stories with your life. it’s going to sound like a great idea, and you are going to get excited about it, and then when it comes time to do the work, you’re not going to want to do it. It’s like that with writing books, and it’s like that with life. People love to have lived a great story, but few people like the work it takes to make it happen. But joy costs pain. (pp. 99-100)

This really hit home. It’s really easy to have grand plans, but it’s tough to actually follow through with them. I usually get lost somewhere between planning and implementing.

I was watching the movie Star Wars recently and wondered what made that movie so good. Of course, there are a thousand reasons. But I also noticed that if i paused the DVD on any frame, I could point toward any major character and say exactly what that person wanted. No character had a vague ambition. It made me wonder if the reasons our lives seem so muddled is because we keep walking into scenes in which we, along with the people around us, have no clear idea what we want. (p. 113)

This also hit home. It’s a question I’ve been pondering quite a bit lately. What do I want? What is my story? What is my ambition? I’ll probably explore this more in a future post because it’s something I’ve been struggling with for a while.

If these thoughts intrigue you at all, I encourage you to pick up a copy of the book. It’s a really good read. And, it’ll challenge you to take a look at your life and the story you’re living.

Well, I jumped on the bandwagon. I’ve started reading Donald Miller’s latest book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years.

It’s good.

Over the course of two relatively short lunch breaks I’m 70 pages into the 250 page book.

It’s kind of a funny book. It’s a story about a guy trying to tell a story. Obviously there’s a little more to it than that but that’s the basic premise.

It’s a book about story.

As I was reading today I came across a passage in the book that I wanted to share. I thought it was kind of interesting so here it is.

I wonder then, if when people say life is meaningless, what they really mean is their lives are meaningless. I wonder if they’ve chosen to believe their whole existence is unremarkable, and are projecting their dreary life on the rest of us.

It’s an interesting point to ponder.

Do the people who think life is meaningless really just lead unremarkable lives?

I realize this is probably a gross over-generalization; but if he’s right, Christians like me need to address the”life is meaningless” people from a different perspective. We need to help them live remarkable lives.

We need to help them live better stories.

We need to show them that there are better stories out there to live.
