I’m a consumer with a desire to create.

I can tell you what I think about your product and what would make it better but when it comes to creation I am less than inspired. And I wish it weren’t that way.

In all honesty, I figure I have very few original ideas. I like to stand on the shoulders of others and take the next step (adaptation of a line from Jurassic Park).

I have tried to be creative in the past in many different arenas. Something that had come quite naturally to me is my appreciation for music. And since any fool can pick up a guitar and play… I thought it would be an easy transition to creation.

The problem is I lack the discipline and concentration to progress enough to ever play the guitar confidently. For 15 years I have been a mediocre beginner. I’m not sure that will ever change.

And as a mediocre beginner I have tried to write music and poetry, but I have never been as happy as I am when I hear the latest release from (insert musician here).

I guess I am writing this in an attempt to validate this existence. Is it ok to be a consumer?

Is it a creative art in and of itself?

I’m not sure.

All I know is that I have a desire to create… and have yet to find an outlet for that.

With the exponentially growing popularity of smart phone cameras more and more people seem to believe that they are artists. My question is, what does this mean for the true artists of the photography world?

If it’s getting easier and easier for people like me to snap a photo, filter it with some software, and put out a decent photo, where does that leave the photographer who honed those skills over years of practice? Not, knowing a lot, I would guess that there is still a divide between what can be done with software and what can be done with a great camera and a dark room. But what happens as that divide shrinks?

Again, I would have to guess. My guess is that the artist adapts. There is always room for a good eye. To me art is as much a state of mind as it is technique or practice. Art changes and adapts to the tools of the time. It’s people finding creative ways to use the tools available that makes the art, art.

Smart phone cameras and photo apps like instagram and hipstamatic make “art” more accessible to the common man. While they may dumb down techniques that are difficult and time consuming for the true artist, they allow normal people like me to join in the fun. I would hope that a true lover of art would rejoice in this renaissance of photography and take the opportunity to educate others about the art of photography. What do you think?

I may be way off with these thoughts and would welcome a real artist’s comments. These were just a few thoughts I had this morning while drinking my coffee and reading the latest tech news.
